Why didn’t this article show the correlation between happiness and government spending as a percent of GDP. I think that correlation would be much higher than any of the correlations measured.

In reply to Ulick Stafford. Thanks for sharing Ulick. Using happiness as a measurement of success is an intriguing idea that I hope more countries would embrace. I am not familiar with Botswana, sorry. It's an interesting topic though! Our editorial calendar here contains more studies and reviews like these, so maybe we can investigate this in the future.

Fascinating. I congratulate you on your great analysis. I am looking for a basis for a measurement of results of public policy and love the idea of happiness index.

I am also intrigued by the results for Botswana, the country of my girlfriend. I know it to be one of the better run countries in Africa with a better economy and fewer tribal and racial tensions.

However, it scores very low and this is mainly attributed to low unexplained happiness. Do you have any idea why?
